  11. I am getting to the end of my rope as far as USR is concerned.  I
  12. have a new USR Sportster V34+ External and it has the annoying
  13. tendency of resetting itself if it cannot negotiate at least 28.8
  14. in the first few seconds.

  16. First let me assure you that I am not a newbie with modems and
  17. have had great success with PPI's in the modem pool.  Don't ask me
  18. what possessed me to try a USR.

  20. What seems to be happening is that the USR will either reset itself
  21. or connect with no compression if it cannot use the highest symbol
  22. rate (3456 or something).  This seems to be due to Fallback always being
  23. disabled (I have never done an ati6 and seen it enabled).  Thus on any
  24. thing but the cleanest lines (and this varies from call to call) the
  25. modem with reset itself after a few seconds or connect with out compression.
  26. The only way around this is to manually disable the highest or higher
  27. symbol rates depending on the quality of line (ie ats33=32).  I find
  28. this intolerable and the USR is going back if I cannot fix this
  29. within a few days.

  31. I can understand a modem not getting fast connections on poor lines but
  32. it should negoitate the best rate it can without my intervention.

  36. [I will actually tell you what possessed me to try a new USR.  I foolishly
  37. bought a Sportster 28.8 for home about a year ago.  It has never worked
  38. well.  I had to do the same manual symbol rate trick or it would just
  39. negoitiate forever or connect at 21600 sometimes.  My line is not that
  40. noisy and a PPi will do 28.8 V34 and using VFC I can connect at 28.8.  Thus
  41. I use VFC since USR will not admit anything is flaky wrt thier V34
  42. negotiation fallback.  I have been meaning to ship it in for a new one
  43. and wanted to check if the $20 shipping was throwing good money after
  44. bad.  It seems that it probably is as USR does not seem to have inproved.]

  48. If anyone has any ideas or if I have missed something obvious please let
  49. me know.  Perhaps a later ROM revision will help (is there a 2.0)?
  50. Perhaps this is a lemon and I just need to get another?
